3 Hammers Academy PGA Pro Team

From left to right; Tom Gibbs, Rob Bluck, Iain Seath, John Cheetham, Rory Haigh

Rob Bluck – Head PGA Pro at 3 Hammers & Director of Coaching

Favourite player on Europe team and why:
Henrik Stenson – With the ‘Iceman’ on your side he’s sure to humour the rest of the lads with his Swedish banter and he’s definitely a great ‘match player’ he went Head to head with Mickelson at Troon this year and came out on top.. Much of the same please Henrik
Favourite player on USA team and why:
I have to say Jordan Speith. If ever you want a player to ‘get the job done’ it has to be Speith. His putting in big events is incredible. He’s an extremely old head on young shoulders. He’ll defiantly feel at home on US soil. He’s definitely the danger man for Team US
Who is on fire at the moment and one to watch (either team):
You’ve got say Rory McIlroy from last weekends display at Tour Champs and Dustin Johnson. He was disappointing last week but he’s sure to come back firing this week he’s too good not to. His power and cool demeanour makes him a danger man to watch out for.
Favourite all time Ryder Cup Moment:
My first memory of the Ryder Cup was Sam Torrance holing the winning putt at The Belfry in 1985 (Definitely showing my age here). Faldo’s putt to beat Curtis Strange in 1995 at Oakhill. Phil Walton’s emotional interview was class! However the one for me has to the final day in 2012 when Europe trailed by 10 – 6 going into the final day singles. It was known as the “Miracle in Medinah” a team of heroes inspired by loss of the great Seve. That epic final round will take some beating…
Who do you think will win the 2016 Ryder Cup:
EUROPE!!!

John Cheetham – Ladies Love Golf Director , Class AA PGA Professional, Staffordshire County Boys Coach

Favourite player on Europe team and why:
The Masters Champion Danny Willett! One of England’s finest players who works incredibly hard on his game and was rewarded with his first major title this year. He has a great golfing head on his shoulders and a fantastic short game. He also has years of Matchplay experience from his amateur days so I expect him to contribute well to the European team!
Favourite player on USA team and why:
I’d say Brandt Snedeker. He quietly goes about his business but has been a top player for so many years now and won’t be phased by the big occasion. When on form I would also say he has one of the best putting actions on the tour which in Matchplay can be a valuable asset!!
Who is on fire at the moment and one to watch (either team):
I think a key player for the USA could be Patrick Reed. He seems to feed off the Ryder Cup atmosphere and could be a danger man. The other person I will say here is Rafa Cabrero Bello who is one of he best ball strikers I’ve seen in person and I think has the game to suit Hazeltine National!
Favourite all time Ryder Cup Moment:
My favourite memory from the Ryder Cup came from the ‘Miracle in Medinah’ when Justin Rose held a 30 foot on the 17th to keep Europe’s hopes alive. This putt was met with a clap from his opponent Phil Mickelson. For me this captured the spirit of the Ryder Cup perfectly and was a great example to all golfers watching!
Who do you think will win the 2016 Ryder Cup:
EUROPE! We have the players and the team spirit!

The Miracle Of Medinah

Tom Gibbs – Advanced PGA Professional, Senior Instructor at 3 Hammers
Favourite player on Europe team and why :
Just one? Very hard choice! I’ve always liked Lee Westwood having been a member of his fan club as a kid but I’m going to have to go with Sergio Garcia, I love the way he plays, you know he is going to give you excitement and drama. His experience from past Ryder cups is going to be very important with the amount of rookies in the team. It will be interesting to see who he’s paired with for the foursomes and four balls.
Favourite player on USA team and why :
I’ve got to go with Rickie Fowler, I was lucky enough to meet him on the practice ground at this years open and get one of our juniors caps signed by him (see attached pic). He is genuinely a nice person and has time for everyone, it’s clear to see he is liked behind the ropes. I also love the way he plays and think he is a great ambassador for the game and getting more juniors playing.

Who is on fire at the moment and the one to watch (either team) :
Well the easy answer there has got to be Rory McIlroy with his win last week, hopefully he can take it into this week and recreate his start in the singles at Gleneagles. Ones to watch are so hard to pick especially with the team format, two pairings that I’m sure will feature for the Europeans and definitely be ones to watch are Lee Westwood and Danny Willett and also Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson. One a completely new partnership but greet friendship and the other a tried and tested powerhouse pairing. I am also going to go outside the box with this one and say Tiger Woods and Bubba Watson being vice captains, for me both interesting picks as not overly team orientated so will be interesting to see how they go about their jobs and what influence they have.
Favourite all time Ryder Cup moment :
Watching on TV that has to be Miracle of Medinah. I remember turning to my Dad after the first two days and saying that’s it its theirs. Then to watch Ian Poulter‘s performance and see him lift the Europeans and give us hope was incredible. The Sunday singles was just incredible to watch and obviously it was capped off by us completing the comeback and capturing the cup. I have also been lucky enough to experience the atmosphere of the Ryder Cup live and be a part of the crowd. A moment I will always remember from this is standing at the back of the 10th at The Belfry when Lee Westwood and Sergio Garcia both drove the green. The atmosphere was unbelievable!!
Who do you think will win Ryder Cup 2016 :
I am a little worried about a US backlash after recent years but I just can’t bring myself to say them. I’ve got to say TEAM EUROPE!
Rory Haigh – 3 Hammers Academy Instructor & Events Coordinator
Favourite player on Europe team and why :
My favourite player on the European team is Sergio Garcia. I can’t believe he has never won a major. His ball striking is unbelievable, shame his putting let’s him down a little. Has loads of experience and passion for the Ryder Cup.
Favourite player on USA team and why :
I’d have to say favourite player is Jordan Speith. I can’t believe the age he is, acts so mature, speaks great and love his on course commentary to his caddie ‘Michael’. His putting is undeniably the strongest part of his game and will win him a few points this week.
Who is on fire at the moment and the one to watch (either team) :
Rory McIlroy is on fire for the Europeans and DJ has been so steady this year for team USA. Definitely the ones to watch. However they are the best players in the world and can all beat each other on their day.
Favourite all time Ryder Cup moment :
2012 ‘Miracle at Medinah’ it was absolutely incredible to watch. That ‘Super Sunday Singles’ was so good for Europeans, captained by Jose Maria Olazabal being spurred on in spirit by Seve. On more of a personal note going to the Ryder Cup in 2002 at The Belfry and witnessing the atmosphere live, and seeing Paul McGinley hole the winning putt on the 18th.
Who do you think will win Ryder Cup 2016 :
Unfortunately I’m going to have to say USA. I think it could be as close as a flip of a coin but on home sole, wanting a win so badly, Davis Love already having been captain brings his added experience.
Iain Seath – Academy Instructor & Junior Golf Coordinator
Favourite player on Europe team and why :
Sergio Garcia – has not won a major even tho he has been so close on so many occasions, he is always on the top of the leader board. He relates to his fans and always signs autographs. True professional…
Favourite player on USA team and why :
Rickie Fowler is flamboyant and charismatic make Golf more appealing to the young generation. Great striker and team player
Who is on fire at the moment and the one to watch (either team) :
Undisputed Rory McIlroy as he looks like he has hit form, winning the Tour Championship weekend gone.  He is full of surprises and thrives under pressure best ball striker on tour.
Favourite all time Ryder Cup moment :
Justin Rose at Medinah when he held a long putt against Phil Mickelson on the 17th this was a turning point and the catalyst for Europe’s win.
Who do you think will win Ryder Cup 2016 :
Close one to call as it is on US turf, but I feel Europe will edge it with the strength and depth in experience.
Unlucky not to be in the team Gmac with Tom, Iain and Rory
